Problem
Cathedral Cars, Faced the urgent need to modernise their phone-only booking system as customers increasingly expected app-based services like the over 300 million people worldwide already using taxi apps.
The outdated process created friction for both customers dealing with lengthy booking times and drivers lacking centralised tools to manage rides and earnings.
As lead product designer, I was responsible for designing Cathedral Cars' first mobile app ecosystem—both customer booking and driver companion platforms. The goal was to create a streamlined, modern experience that would eliminate phone booking friction, reduce booking times, and provide efficient driver tools, ultimately helping the taxi company compete with other ride-hailing services while attracting new customers and retaining their loyal base.
Research
Customer interviews showed users want to quickly use scheduled rides with just a few taps instead of calling and waiting on hold.
Drivers faced challenges like no visibility into their daily ride counts, earnings cuts, or customer feedback, making it hard to track performance or plan finances.
Working closely with the development team, we focused on simplicity and efficiency in design and implementation, ensuring features were practical and straightforward.
Solution
For customers, we created a streamlined booking experience with saved locations for quick rebooking, real-time nearby taxi visibility, and transparent driver and vehicle info. The user-friendly UI with smooth animations reduces booking times and allows ride ratings to enhance service quality.
For drivers, the app improved operational efficiency through features like ride history with earnings, customer ratings, easy online/offline status, saved message templates, ride management tools, live directions, and direct communication channels. This eliminated uncertainty about performance and earnings and provided drivers with professional management capabilities.

When accepting the driver gets instant directions from the app and the ability to alert the customer or HQ of any mishaps. From a simple tap the ride can start.
Mission Completed
When the ride is done with a slide of a button the ride can officially end and now the driver is ready for the next one.
Results
The app resulted in a 52% increase in users, a 25% boost in user retention within three months, and a 84% improvement in booking speed, accompanied by a 47% rise in Google reviews with an average rating of 4.4.
Users and stakeholders lauded the app’s simplicity and efficiency, highlighting how it made booking faster and management easier without feeling cluttered.
This experience underscored the importance of user-centred design and showed how optimising efficiency can elevate user satisfaction, inspiring future enhancements like personalised features and further streamlining for drivers.
